And then imagine processing power strong enough to make sense of all this data in every language and in every dimension. Unless you’ve achieved that digital data nirvana (and you haven’t told the rest of us), you’re going to have some unknowns in your world. In the world of security, unknown threats exist outside the enterprise in the form of malicious actors, state-sponsored attacks and malware that moves fast and destroys everything it touches. The unknown exists inside the enterprise in the form of insider threat from rogue employees or careless contractors – which was deemed by 24% of our survey respondents to pose the most serious risk to their organizations. The unknown exists in the form of new devices, new cloud applications, and new data. The unknown is what keeps CISOs, what keeps you, up at night – and we know because we asked you.

When it comes to the threat landscape, it’s important to take a look in the rearview mirror once in a while. As with driving, not only do you get a good look at what’s behind you, but you can often spot what’s coming up quick, set to overtake you. That’s the spirit of this threat report. We’ve picked out five key stories from the last year or so, not just because they were big events, but because we think these threats, or similar ones, could very well appear in the near future. Take modular threats like Emotet and VPNFilter, for example. These are threats that can deliver an on-demand menu of attacks and threats, depending on which device is infected or the intended goal of the attacker. We saw plenty of such modular threats in recent history, and wouldn’t be surprised if we see more in the future. Email remains the darling delivery method of attackers, with threats from cryptomining to Emotet using it to spread. It’s also highly likely that other threats, such as unauthorized M

Imagine if you could see deep into the future. And way back into the past, both at the same time. From stolen consumer data to sensitive data leaks, it seems that no one’s data has been safe in recent years. For numerous reasons, like misconfigured storage repositories and unpatched vulnerabilities, this trend is likely to continue. The integration of digital technology into all areas of business has resulted in more of our data being stored on computers and websites targeted by hackers, which has significantly increased the number of data breaches as well as organizations’ vulnerability to malware attacks. For example, the Equifax breach impacted 145 MM consumers, and with more employees working remotely on a wide range of devices, the threat landscape has expanded. The meteoric rise of the public cloud has compounded this issue, as data security requires new knowledge and skill sets in short supply, often leading to misconfigured and insecure solutions. Companies need to adopt the approach that every piece of data in their possession, on-premises or in the cloud, must be encryp

Sophisticated application attacks like WannaCry and NotPetya garnered a lot of attention in the news — and with good reason. They’re evolving, persistant, and rapidly increasing in frequency. But app attacks aren’t the only threats that should be on your radar. Threats of every kind can be pervasive. From the network to applications, attacks continue to hit organizations at every layer of the infrastructure. Historically, the solution has been to tack on another point product, but this approach leaves gaps in security. Only a comprehensive, end-to-end solution can fully protect your data — regardless of where it lives.

The Internet of Things (IoT) unleashes valuable business insights through data that’s gathered at every level of a retail organization. With IoT and data analytics, retailers now have the capability to gather insight into customer behavior, offer more personalized experiences, achieve better inventory accuracy, create greater supply chain efficiencies, and so much more. But with data comes great risk. A recent report by security firm Thales and 451 Research found that 43 percent of retailers have experienced a data breach in the past year, with a third reporting more than one breach.1 Intel® technology-based gateways and Asavie, a provider of next-gen enterprise mobility management and IoT connectivity solutions, offer a security connectivity solution that minimizes the effort and cost to businesses to ensure safety from cybersecurity attacks. In addition, the Intel/Asavie IoT solution provides retailers with a solid basis to build their smart, connected projects:

The WannaCry ransomware attack in May 2017 crippled the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and disrupted a range of organizations across 150 countries. Despite being a relatively unsophisticated attack, WannaCry was able to make such a global impact due to preventable vulnerabilities that had largely gone unaddressed. There were many more attacks in 2017, including high-profile breaches at Uber and Equifax, where heeding cyber-security recommendations may have reduced the impact and fallout. The scale and sophistication of cyber-attacks is not slowing down – ranging from phishing scams to cryptocurrency-based cyber-attacks, to statesponsored attacks on industrial control systems. These attacks present an ever growing challenge and serve as a reminder that organizations cannot afford to be complacent in the face of cyber threats. We’re living in a time when cyberattacks are a matter of when, not if, and security professionals must focus on mitigating their extent and damage.

Email. It’s the number-one business application used by organizations. It’s also the number-one method used to execute cyberattacks, enabling malware delivery, phishing, impersonations, and the spread of threats that are already internal to your organization. In fact, 91 percent of all cyberattacks start with an email. And your organization can’t function for long without email. How many hours of email downtime can your organization comfortably live with? If email isn’t accessible due to an adverse incident like malicious intent, human error or technical failure, your organization would likely suffer. The only way to get ahead of cybercriminals and to holistically protect your business is to adopt a new approach to email security. You need a multidimensional approach that brings together threat protection, adaptability, durability and recoverability in a single cloud-based service. You need to enable these four dimensions to truly provide cyber resilience for your email.

The current era in cyber security is characterized by three fundamental challenges: the complexity of the enterprise network and connected infrastructure, the speed of newage attacks, and the strain of overwhelmed incident responders. In many ways, the expansion of networks and continual adoption of new technologies - from cloud services to the Internet of Things - has expanded the attack surface and introduced new entry-points through which attackers can gain a foothold. This, combined with the ready availability of exploit kits on the Dark Web, has led to the ‘vicious circle of the SOC’, where incident responders are so busy fire-fighting that they rarely have time to implement the critical patches that would prevent the problem at source. As security teams struggle to keep up with the rising volume of routine attacks, a new generation of cyberthreat has also emerged, characterized in large part by fast-moving threats that make an impact well before humans have time to respond. What if defenders could see the future? If they knew an attack was coming, they could stop it, or at least mitigate its impact and help ensure what they need to protect most is safe. The fact is, defenders can see what’s on the horizon. Many clues are out there—and obvious. The Cisco 2018 Annual Cybersecurity Report presents our latest security industry advances designed to help organizations and users defend against attacks. We also look at the techniques and strategies that adversaries use to break through those defenses and evade detection. The report also highlights major findings from the Cisco 2018 Security Capabilities Benchmark Study, which examines the security posture of enterprises and their perceptions of their preparedness to defend against attacks.

Security is a looming issue for businesses. The threat landscape is increasing, and attacks are becoming more sophisticated. Emerging technologies like IoT, mobility, and hybrid IT environments now open new business opportunity, but they also introduce new risk. Protecting servers at the software level is no longer enough. Businesses need to reach down into the physical system level to stay ahead of threats. With today’s increasing regulatory landscape, compliance is more critical for both increasing security and reducing the cost of compliance failures. With these pieces being so critical, it is important to bring new levels of hardware protection and drive security all the way down to the supply chain level. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has a strategy to deliver this through its unique server firmware protection, detection, and recovery capabilities, as well as its HPE Security Assurance.

Web application and DDoS attacks hit enterprises without warning or reason. Most Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks require little skill to launch with attackers can simply rent resources from DDoS-for-hire sites at a low cost.. In comparison, DDoS attacks typically result in: • Operational disruption • Loss of confidential data • Lost user productivity • Reputational harm • Damage to partner and customer relations • Lost revenue Depending on your industry, that could add up to tens of thousands of dollars in damage – and in some cases it could be millions. Only 2% of organizations said their web applications had not been compromised in the past 12 months – 98% said they had.
