The modern data center has changed. There are new demands around cloud computing, big data and infrastructure efficiency. This change in the data center is being driven by more users, more data and a lot more reliance on the data center itself. With private cloud technologies and the rapid growth in data leading the way within many technological categories (the Internet of Things), working with the right data center optimization technologies has never been more important. In this white paper, we explore new concepts around data center demand, where energy efficiency and cooling optimization fit in and modern best practices around your data center.

The demand for more efficient and cost effective computing has driven organizations large and small to reevaluate their strategies. This examination can incorporate many aspects, encompassing system architecture and software platforms, as well as the IT hardware, and of course the data center facility. Moreover, there are many strategic options for the enterprise CIO and CTO to consider, such as the possibility of direct or indirect ownership and operation of their own data center facility, as well as colocation, cloud, or hybrid combinations thereof. Nonetheless, the IT hardware must ultimately reside in a physical data center that will provide conditioned power and safe environmental conditions for the IT equipment.

Business and IT are no longer separate silos. Your application is your business, and software development is the glue that holds it together. But how can you develop your business and the applications that support it at the same time? How far can you push one before the other breaks? An increasingly large swath of businesses are realizing that the cloud-plus-data-centers model really provides the best of both worlds, and integrating the public virtual cloud with the physical data center is the best way to cost effectively scale, secure, and serve modern production workloads.

Today’s modern IT infrastructure is demanding more out of its resources, expansion strategies, delivery methods and disaster recovery methodologies. To help meet these new growing demands, many organizations are turning to colocation providers to help service their data center needs. But what makes up a good data center decision? Is it just the location? What about the bandwidth coming into the site? What about green technologies and the adoption of new unified technologies? The reality here is that there are several key consideration points which need to be made when choosing the right data center colocation solution. Now with cloud computing and a truly distributed, data on-demand, environment, making the right choice has become more important than ever.

The data center has assumed a new, more prominent role as a strategic asset within the organization. Increasing capacity demands and the pressure to support the “always-on” digital business are forcing data centers to adapt, evolve, and respond at an increasingly accelerated rate. Cloud, mobility, IoT, big data – these and other interrelated trends are putting enormous pressure on the modern data center. To keep pace, today’s physical infrastructure has become vastly more complex, interconnected, and performance-driven than a decade ago.-

CyrusOne’s quick-delivery data center product provides a solution for cloud technology, social media and enterprise companies that have trouble building or obtaining data center capacity fast enough to support their information technology (IT) infrastructure. In trying to keep pace with overwhelming business growth, these companies often find it hard to predict their future capacity needs. A delay in obtaining data center space can also delay or stop a company’s revenue-generating initiatives, and have significant negative impact on the bottom line.

Energy costs are the fastest-rising expense for today’s data centers. Naturally, power consumption is a top concern for managers of data center, enterprise, and cloud environments. Moreover, there are multiple proprietary power measurement and control protocols supported by various solution providers, making it challenging to have a single solution for power management across all devices in the data center. After a successful Intel IT proof of concept (PoC) using Intel® Data Center Manager (Intel® DCM) that ended in 2013, we deployed the solution across data centers in multiple countries. In our initial use of Intel DCM, we considered the solution to be focused primarily on gaining a better understanding of the power consumption and thermal status of servers. With broad deployment, we learned that Intel DCM is capable of much more.

Unless you’ve achieved that digital data nirvana (and you haven’t told the rest of us), you’re going to have some unknowns in your world. In the world of security, unknown threats exist outside the enterprise in the form of malicious actors, state-sponsored attacks and malware that moves fast and destroys everything it touches. The unknown exists inside the enterprise in the form of insider threat from rogue employees or careless contractors – which was deemed by 24% of our survey respondents to pose the most serious risk to their organizations. The unknown exists in the form of new devices, new cloud applications, and new data. The unknown is what keeps CISOs, what keeps you, up at night – and we know because we asked you.

Moving major, business-supporting applications to the cloud can be a challenge for a variety of reasons. You may have concerns about the physical migration of data, as data loss or business disruption stemming from a migration issue would be a disaster for the business. Security is another typical concern, as a data breach of your most sensitive applications—like SAP or Oracle— could prove highly damaging. Akin to security, data sovereignty is an issue for many businesses. Stringent compliance laws in some jurisdictions are dictating data “residency”; and in the cloud, it is not always clear where the data is housed. Among managed cloud service users, 68% state that using such services helps them to better manage resource allocation and make SAP and Oracle costs more predictable. In this paper, we will look at common concerns over deploying and optimally managing business-critical, legacy applications in the cloud. We consider the benefits of managed cloud services, and how your

IT organizations are no longer just a business support function and cost center—they are expected to drive business as part of the core corporate strategy. Adding to this, IT landscapes continue to increase in complexity, complicating management and innovation. Digital transformation helps IT adapt to these changes. Building a hybrid or multi-cloud IT environment can help you transform successfully. An effective cloud environment can provide: • Improved infrastructure management and flexibility • More time for IT to focus on strategic projects rather than manage data centers. • Better IT cost management In fact, 49% of companies cite “modernized IT infrastructure and technologies with increased agility, flexibility, manageability, and security” as a digital initiative on their long-term roadmap. "Managing and securing endpoints with conventional mobile device management (MDM) or enterprise mobile management (EMM) solutions is time-consuming and ineffective. For this reason, global IT leaders are turning towards unified endpoint management (UEM) solutions to consolidate their management of smartphones, tablets, laptops and IoT devices into a single management console. To increase operational efficiency, maximize data security and deliver on their digital transformation goals, they’ll need a UEM platform that does more than just promise success. The answer is a smarter solution, built for today, that brings new opportunities, threats, and efficiency improvements to the forefront. With Watson™, IBM® MaaS360® UEM features cognitive insights, contextual analytics, and cloud-sourced benchmarking capabilities. It helps you make sense of daily mobile details while managing your endpoints, users, apps, document, and data from one platform."
