Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) has become more vital than ever to data center operations as efficiency and technology advancement cycles move at an increasingly rapid pace. The insight provided by these essential systems has historically only been accessible to the data center operations team, not the end user or for that matter – the colocated customer. Now that the technology sector as a whole is becoming increasingly user friendly, transparent and hands on, it makes sense for colocation data centers to offer a higher level of insight and transparency into their clients’ individual environments.

When companies evaluate potential data centers and colocation service providers, they normally compare them using some kind of criteria or checklist. However, many such efforts fail to sufficiently evaluate the breadth and depth of detail necessary to make a well informed decision. This white paper examines several key criteria as they relate to service delivery from a data center or colocation provider. Specifically, this paper examines the importance of factors such as risk mitigation, operational processes and service assurance, combined with maintenance and lifecycle strategies that directly contribute to “high-availability service delivery.”

The demand for more efficient and cost effective computing has driven organizations large and small to reevaluate their strategies. This examination can incorporate many aspects, encompassing system architecture and software platforms, as well as the IT hardware, and of course the data center facility. Moreover, there are many strategic options for the enterprise CIO and CTO to consider, such as the possibility of direct or indirect ownership and operation of their own data center facility, as well as colocation, cloud, or hybrid combinations thereof. Nonetheless, the IT hardware must ultimately reside in a physical data center that will provide conditioned power and safe environmental conditions for the IT equipment.

Multimode fiber (MMF) cabling is the workhorse media of local area network (LAN) backbones and data centers because it offers the lowest cost means of transporting high data rates for distances aligned with the needs of these environments. MMF has evolved from being optimized for multi-megabit per second transmission using light emitting diode (LED) light sources to being specialized to support multi-gigabit transmission using 850 nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) sources. Channel capacity has been multiplied through the use of parallel transmission over multiple strands of fiber. These advances have increased multimode supported data rates by an astounding factor of 40,000 — from 10 Mb/s in the late 1980s to 100 Gb/s in 2010, with 400 Gb/s in development in 2015. Today, these extraordinary rates are created from collections of 25 Gb/s lanes carried on either four or sixteen strands of fiber in each direction

Even through challenging economic times, the need for physical data center capacity continues to grow. For some businesses, the driver is expansion into new markets or geographies. For others, it's the need to deal with growing amounts of data generated by applications with high-capacity demands, evolving end-user abilities, or regulatory bodies that demand ever-increasing quantities of meticulous documentation. The "build-or-buy" decision between construction and colocation should be weighed carefully, as the choice will affect your company and your bottom line quite literally for decades. This executive report will review six key factors that affect that choice, some of which extend beyond a basic TCO analysis.

A recent survey of 200 data center managers across the US and UK reveals that a large proportion of centers take a manual approach to planning and forecasting. Despite its limitations, MS Excel emerges as a popular tool and nearly one in ten resort to walking around a data center with a tape measure. Only just over half are able to benefit from using Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tools. The manual approach is not limited to smaller data centers by any means; the proportion was found to remain the same even amongst the larger data centers (with above 1,500 servers). When asked why manual methods were employed, 46% said it was because they felt that the alternatives would be too expensive. A further 35% feared they lacked the resources to implement a more automated approach. Whilst both these factors may seem reasonable enough at first sight, both might actually represent false economies in the longer run.

Imagine if you could see deep into the future. And way back into the past, both at the same time. Imagine having visibility of everything that had ever happened and everything that was ever going to happen, everywhere, all at once. And then imagine processing power strong enough to make sense of all this data in every language and in every dimension. Unless you’ve achieved that digital data nirvana (and you haven’t told the rest of us), you’re going to have some unknowns in your world. In the world of security, unknown threats exist outside the enterprise in the form of malicious actors, state-sponsored attacks and malware that moves fast and destroys everything it touches. The unknown exists inside the enterprise in the form of insider threat from rogue employees or careless contractors – which was deemed by 24% of our survey respondents to pose the most serious risk to their organizations. The unknown exists in the form of new devices, new cloud applications, and new data. The unk

Enterprises, beware. Threat actors are continuing to eye businesses for high returns on investment in Q1 2019, breaching infrastructure, exfiltrating or holding data hostage, and abusing weak credentials for continued, targeted monitoring. From a steadfast increase of pervasive Trojans, such as Emotet, to a resurgence of ransomware lodged against corporate targets, cybercriminals are going after organizations with a vengeance. Yet every cloud has a silver lining, and for all the additional effort thrown at businesses, consumer threats are now on the decline. Ransomware against consumers has slowed down to a trickle and cryptomining, at a fever pitch against consumers this time last year, has all but died. Interestingly, this has resulted in an overall decline in the volume of malware detections from Q4 2018 to Q1 2019. While threat actors made themselves busy with challenging new victims, they ensnared targets in the old ways, using tried-and-true malspam and social engineering tactic

The Cornerstone of Financial Control Time equals money. Time plus data equals control. All professionals, whether in management, consulting, engineering, or accounting, must be confident that their value is reflected in their bottom line. One of the primary factors driving that compensation is the amount of time spent on a particular subject or client. But too often front line earners at those firms don’t provide the clean, data-rich timesheets needed to accurately gauge the effort required by each project.

These include: Smart Machines, Smart Factory, cyber physical systems, Everything-as-a-Service and a few technologies like OPC UA, cloud and data analytics. Clearly, they are the innovation drivers and must-haves for every vendor of automation products that want to be recognized as leaders or challengers. Sooner or later they will become standards and used by followers and niche players, but the key question for the market of automation suppliers is not who is first in developing and providing all the nice concepts and technologies, but who is creating and combining them in the right way so that they can be turned into new revenue streams. We keep in mind that competitive advantages can be achieved through increasing operational efficiency, but the better way is through strategic uniqueness. Companies which ar

Data is the lifeblood of business. And in the era of digital business, the organizations that utilize data most effectively are also the most successful. Whether structured, unstructured or semi-structured, rapidly increasing data quantities must be brought into organizations, stored and put to work to enable business strategies. Delivering personalized customer experience remains the top business challenge for communications service providers (CSPs). Ovum's recently published 2018 ICT Enterprise survey saw almost all CSP IT executives interviewed identify delivering personalized customer experience as one of their three most important business challenges for the next 18 months. This trend emphasizes the high priority CSPs place on how customer relationships are managed. However, several factors have an impact on CSPs' ability to identify and then deliver customers' core needs. These include understanding the data sets they should focus on; collecting, cleansing, and consolidating these data sets; and having the right expertise to mine the data sets.
