The primary focus of any data center is the critical applications that form an enterprise’s business and operational core—its commercial and technical heart. Last-generation facilities, which were often designed using traditional methods created during the mainframe era, simply aren’t capable of handling the requirements of today’s businesscritical applications. Additionally, deploying a data center with inadequate or inappropriate resources, or placing the facility in the wrong location, can negatively impact application performance and, in turn, enterprise success.

Multimode fiber (MMF) cabling is the workhorse media of local area network (LAN) backbones and data centers because it offers the lowest cost means of transporting high data rates for distances aligned with the needs of these environments. MMF has evolved from being optimized for multi-megabit per second transmission using light emitting diode (LED) light sources to being specialized to support multi-gigabit transmission using 850 nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) sources. Channel capacity has been multiplied through the use of parallel transmission over multiple strands of fiber. These advances have increased multimode supported data rates by an astounding factor of 40,000 — from 10 Mb/s in the late 1980s to 100 Gb/s in 2010, with 400 Gb/s in development in 2015. Today, these extraordinary rates are created from collections of 25 Gb/s lanes carried on either four or sixteen strands of fiber in each direction

Energy costs are the fastest-rising expense for today’s data centers. Naturally, power consumption is a top concern for managers of data center, enterprise, and cloud environments. Moreover, there are multiple proprietary power measurement and control protocols supported by various solution providers, making it challenging to have a single solution for power management across all devices in the data center. After a successful Intel IT proof of concept (PoC) using Intel® Data Center Manager (Intel® DCM) that ended in 2013, we deployed the solution across data centers in multiple countries. In our initial use of Intel DCM, we considered the solution to be focused primarily on gaining a better understanding of the power consumption and thermal status of servers. With broad deployment, we learned that Intel DCM is capable of much more.

Ponemon Institute and Emerson Network Power are pleased to present the results of the latest Cost of Data Center Outages study. Previously published in 2010 and 2013, the purpose of this third study is to continue to analyze the cost behavior of unplanned data center outages. According to our new study, the average cost of a data center outage has steadily increased from $505,502 in 2010 to $740,357 today (or a 38 percent net change).

The Security Operations Center (SOC) is the first line of defense against cyber attacks. They are charged with defending the business against the many new and more virulent attacks that occur all day, every day. And the pressure on the SOC is increasing.
