The need for the “Connected Infrastructure of Tomorrow” is approaching faster than you think. With the Internet of Things (IoT) there are new and critical considerations to think about as one prepares for what’s ahead. Are you ready for it? To start planning and preparing now for tomorrow’s network, we have to understand the requirements for power, light and data today. We have to be smart about the future1. What will the world we live, play and work in be like 10-15 years from now? One can only guess, but there are some important things to consider today, when we design the infrastructure to support tomorrow’s needs being driven by billions of IoT connected devices.

Energy costs are the fastest-rising expense for today’s data centers. Naturally, power consumption is a top concern for managers of data center, enterprise, and cloud environments. Moreover, there are multiple proprietary power measurement and control protocols supported by various solution providers, making it challenging to have a single solution for power management across all devices in the data center. After a successful Intel IT proof of concept (PoC) using Intel® Data Center Manager (Intel® DCM) that ended in 2013, we deployed the solution across data centers in multiple countries. In our initial use of Intel DCM, we considered the solution to be focused primarily on gaining a better understanding of the power consumption and thermal status of servers. With broad deployment, we learned that Intel DCM is capable of much more.

Today, business is conducted in a fast-paced, on-demand, globally dispersed environment. Maintaining a competitive edge requires cohesive real-time collaboration. Mobile workers, partners, vendors, suppliers, and even customers expect to be able to work together seamlessly, both inside and outside the firewall. But delivering tools for high-quality collaboration is often challenging, due to the need for businesses of all sizes to support a wide range of personal and business devices. Mixing disparate devices with complex conferencing solutions often lead to frustrated employees, while businesses face a labor-intensive, costly endeavor without a high ROI. In addition, collaboration is evolving with businesses creating small "huddle" spaces and open workspaces that increase the demand for ubiquitous, effective conferencing. The Intel Unite ' solution is a fast, simple, cost-efficient way to deliver a more secure, manageable, high-quality collaboration experience. Whether you select the

In years past, device functionality was enough to sell most embedded products without much concern for cybersecurity. Of course there were exceptions, such as in critical infrastructure, aviation, and military, for which security was always of importance. But today’s environment has evolved on several fronts. First, organizations across nearly all markets are demanding Internet connectivity to monitor and control devices as well as to aggregate and analyze data. Second, the magnitude of security threats has exploded, driven by highly sophisticated hackers including organized criminal gangs seeking financial returns, creating a constantly evolving threat landscape. Third, the increasingly complex nature of connected systems makes them ever more challenging to protect. The more complex a system, the more potential vulnerabilities it may contain. And fourth, the data generated by connected devices represent an asset that is becoming increasingly valuable for organizations to derive insigh

Today’s security appliances and agents must wait until malware reaches the perimeter or endpoint before they can detect or prevent it. OpenDNS arrests attacks earlier in the kill chain. Enforcing security at the DNS layer prevents a malicious IP connection from ever being established or a malicious file from ever being downloaded. This same DNS layer of network security can contain malware and any compromised system from exfiltrating data. Command & control (C2) callbacks to the attacker’s botnet infrastructure are blocked over any port or protocol. Unlike appliances, the cloud service protects devices both on and off the corporate network. Unlike agents, the DNS layer protects every device connected to the network — even IoT. It is the easiest and fastest layer of security to deploy everywhere.

Users are working off-hours, off-network, and off-VPN. Are you up on all the ways DNS can be used to secure them? If not, maybe it’s time to brush up. More than 91% of malware uses DNS to gain command and control, exfiltrate data, or redirect web traffic. Because DNS is a protocol used by all devices that connect to the internet, security at the DNS layer is critical for achieving the visibility and protection you need for any users accessing the internet. Learn how DNS-layer security can help you block threats before they reach your network or endpoints.

Once critical and basic coverage is handled, start monitoring devices to keep everything tied together. If a switch, router, or hub goes down, or a printer starts having issues, you’ll know before the complaints start rolling in. When you automate recurring processes or tasks, your team can focus on delivering value instead of putting out fires.

The hybrid cloud has arrived for the enterprise, but it comes with a complication: the speed of light. Between the cloud and the end user (including IoT devices that count as ‘users’), there is an emerging need for an intermediate environment that can satisfy real-time compute requirements without incurring the latency of reaching all the way to the cloud. ‘Edge compute’ is the phrase used to describe what covers this middle ground, but the optimal location for edge compute resources remains open to question.

The future of work has arrived, and with it comes a complex new balancing act for IT. On one side of the scale are high expectations for how IT can enable digital transformation and innovation in the business. On the other side is more accountability for mitigating risk, even as growing adoption of new technologies means more apps, more devices, and more mobile employees. This balancing act is driven by current challenges and trends in four areas.
