Power consumption in the data center continues to be a rising trend. The need to provide redundant power systems with high reliability and availability of compute resources is a major driving force for the increase in power utilization. Some data centers use just as much power for non-compute or “overhead energy” like cooling, lighting and power conversions, as they do to power servers. The ultimate goal is to reduce this “overhead energy” loss, so that more power is dedicated to revenue-generating equipment, without jeopardizing reliability and availability of resources.

THE TOP 10 CRITERIA TO DISCUSS WHEN TOURING A DATA CENTER Choosing a data center or colocation provider to house your company’s critical IT infrastructure is a huge decision. Unfortunately, colocation providers don’t make it easy to differentiate between them. Many data center tours will have the same components: a sales rep will show you their data center’s battery rooms, cooling equipment, security measures, and generators, all the while assuring you that they are highly secure, reliable, well maintained, invulnerable to natural disasters, and capable of high density computing. After a few tours, it may seem as though there isn’t much difference between one data center and the next. This couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s important to know what to look for so you can make an informed decision. Migrating your IT environment is risky, often expensive, and certainly time consuming — you want to make the right choice the 1st time

The demand for more efficient and cost effective computing has driven organizations large and small to reevaluate their strategies. This examination can incorporate many aspects, encompassing system architecture and software platforms, as well as the IT hardware, and of course the data center facility. Moreover, there are many strategic options for the enterprise CIO and CTO to consider, such as the possibility of direct or indirect ownership and operation of their own data center facility, as well as colocation, cloud, or hybrid combinations thereof. Nonetheless, the IT hardware must ultimately reside in a physical data center that will provide conditioned power and safe environmental conditions for the IT equipment.

WAN edge infrastructure is changing rapidly as I&O leaders responsible for networking face dynamic business requirements, including new application architectures and on-premises and cloud-based deployment models. I&O leaders can use this research to identify vendors that best fit their requirements. By year-end 2023, more than 90% of WAN edge infrastructure refresh initiatives will be based on virtualized customer premises equipment (vCPE) platforms or software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) software/appliances versus traditional routers (up from less than 40% today).

How do you maintain the security and confidentiality of your organization’s data in a world in which your employees, contractors and partners are now working, file sharing and collaborating on a growing number of mobile devices? Makes you long for the day when data could be kept behind firewalls and employees were, more or less, working on standardized equipment. Now, people literally work on the edge, using various devices and sending often unprotected data to the cloud. This dramatic shift to this diversified way of working has made secure backup, recovery and sharing of data an exponentially more difficult problem to solve. The best approach is to start with a complete solution that can intelligently protect, manage and access data and information across users, heterogeneous devices and infrastructure from a single console - one that can efficiently manage your data for today's mobile environment and that applies rigorous security standards to this function.

Industrial enterprises around the world are retooling their factories with advanced technologies to boost manufacturing flexibility and speed, achieving new levels of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), supply chain responsiveness, and customer satisfaction in the process. This renaissance reflects very real pressures industry players face today. For years, traditional factories have been operating at a disadvantage, impeded by production environments that are “disconnected”—at the very least strictly gated—to corporate business systems, to supply chains, and to customers and partners.

Many manufacturers are pursuing the immense business benefits available from digitizing and connecting their factories. Major gains in overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), reduced downtime, and manufacturing flexibility can be achieved with a factory that is digitized and connected. By providing visibility to machines and processes, manufacturers can anticipate issues that create unplanned downtime. By putting in place a secure, converged and wireless-ready network, manufacturers can have a platform that enables the agility to quickly start up new machines, cells, and lines, and rapidly deliver new products.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is flooding today’s industrial sector with data. Information is streaming in from many sources — equipment on production lines, sensors at customer facilities, sales data, and much more. Harvesting insights means filtering out the noise to arrive at actionable intelligence. This report shows how to craft a strategy to gain a competitive edge. It explains how to evaluate IIoT solutions, including what to look for in end-to-end analytics solutions. Finally, it shows how SAS has combined its analytics expertise with Intel’s leadership in IIoT information architecture to create solutions that turn raw data into valuable insights.

Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) modeling is a powerful machine learning technique for advanced root cause analysis in manufacturing. It will uncover problems that would be missed by regression-based statistical modelling techniques and single tree methods, but can easily be used by analysts with no expertise in statistics and modelling to solve complex problems. It is an excellent choice for advanced equipment commonality analysis and will detect interactions between process factors (for example, machines, recipes, process dates) that are responsible for bad product. It can also be used to identify complex nonlinear relationships and interactions between product quality measurements (for example, yield, defects, field returns) and upstream measurements from the product, process, equipment, component, material, or environment.

The Internet of Things (IoT) presents an opportunity to collect real-time information about every physical operation of a business. From the temperature of equipment to the performance of a fleet of wind turbines, IoT sensors can deliver this information in real time. There is tremendous opportunity for those businesses that can convert raw IoT data into business insights, and the key to doing so lies within effective data analytics. To research the current state of IoT analytics, Blue Hill Research conducted deep qualitative interviews with three organizations that invested significant time and resources into their own IoT analytics initiatives. By distilling key themes and lessons learned from peer organizations, Blue Hill Research offers our analysis so that business decision makers can ultimately make informed investment decisions about the future of their IoT analytics projects.

In a market where compute and storage resources can be bought on demand with a credit card, vendors of on-premises hardware are seeking to tip the scales in their favor with ‘cloud-like’ pricing models that eliminate the need to commit capital to new platforms. At Dell EMC World in May, Dell Financial Services (DFS) rolled out Cloud Flex for HCI (hyperconverged infrastructure), part of the company’s push to evangelize the start-small-and-scale-up virtues of HCI technology. Cloud Flex lets customers acquire equipment on an all-opex basis, with no up-front product cost, steady monthly payments that reduce by up to 30% annually, and the ability to turn in equipment any time after 12 months without penalty. It’s part of a series of moves by Dell EMC meant to ease the financial risk of sticking with on-premises infrastructure in a cloud-enabled world
