Data security is a top concern these days. In a world of privacy regulation, intellectual property theft, and cybercrime, ensuring data security and protecting sensitive enterprise data is crucial. Only a data masking solution can secure vital data and enable outsourcing, third-party analysis, and cloud deployments. But more often than not, masking projects fail. Some of the best data masking tools bottleneck processes and once masked, data is hard to move and manage across the application development lifecycle.

The GDPR is set to have wide-ranging implications for the type of data which can be used in non-production environments. Organizations will need to understand exactly what data they have and who’s using it, and must be able to restrict its use to tasks for which consent has been given.

The key tenets of protecting data privacy are: knowing where your data resides, understanding who has access to the data and what are they doing with it, and knowing how the data is being used internally that may result in non-compliance. Additionally, most compliance projects are major, company-wide initiatives and must be managed properly to meet deadlines and keep costs in check.

The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will be upon us on May 25th 2018, and contrary to enduring public opinion, Brexit won’t make any difference. The GDPR comes in response to global shuffling of privacy laws to meet the growing demands of cloud, data security and other technological needs. The US Safe Harbor framework has been replaced with Privacy Shield, and on top of this is the e-Privacy Regulation, which takes specific interest in electronic communications, cookies for tracking user behaviour online, and other issues around personal data and consent.
