The security information and event management (SIEM) market is defined by the customer's need to analyze event data in real time for the early detection of targeted attacks and data breaches, and to collect, store, analyze, investigate and report on event data for incident response, forensics and regulatory compliance. The vendors included in our Magic Quadrant analysis have products designed for this purpose, and they actively market and sell these technologies to the security buying center.

The velocity of technology infrastructure change continues to accelerate, putting serious stress on Security Operations (SecOps). This has forced security folks to face the fact that operations has never really been their forte. That’s a bit harsh, but denial never helps address problems. The evidence is fairly strong that most organizations are pretty bad at security operations. How many high-profile breaches could have been avoided if one of many alerts was acted upon? How many attacks were made possible by not having properly patched servers or infrastructure? How many successful compromises resulted from human error?

The increase in sophisticated, targeted security threats by both external attackers and malicious insiders have made it extremely difficult for organizations to properly protect critical and sensitive information. The task of protecting these assets has only grown harder as IT environments have become more complex and widely distributed across geographic locations and in the cloud. Many recent high-profile breaches have one thing in common: They were accomplished through the compromise of passwords. In many cases, end-user passwords are initially hacked through various social engineering techniques. Then permissions are escalated to gain access to more privileged accounts — the keys to the kingdom. This unauthorized access can easily go undetected for weeks or even months, allowing hackers to see and steal information at their convenience. Unfortunately, many IT users lack a full understanding of how privileged accounts function, as well as the risks associated with their compromise an

2017 and 2018 were not easy years to be a CIO or CISO, and 2019 isn’t showing any signs of being easier. With so many career-ending-level data breaches in 2017 (e.g., Equifax, Uber, Yahoo, to name a few) and with the stronger regulatory requirements worldwide, CIOs/CISOs have a corporate responsibility to rethink their approach to data security. Regulatory compliance aside, companies have a responsibility to their customers and shareholders to protect data, and minimize its exposure not only to external attackers but also to employees. The most common method of data breach in 2017 was a phishing email sent to a company’s internal employees (See 2017 Data Breach Investigation Report), This makes employees unwillingly complicit in the data breach. Over 80% of successful cyberattacks have a critical human element that enabled them. The average employee who opens the innocent-looking attachment or link, is unintentionally jeopardizing a company’s data. While there is no 100% protection, th

A Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) audit can be passed by complying with the bare minimum requirements, but that falls short of the purpose of it: to secure and protect cardholder data. Meeting compliance is about passing an audit at a specific point in time and also maintaining it after the audit. The real challenge is sustaining continuous compliance to avoid costly breaches at the hands of motivated and skilled adversaries. Indeed, as detailed in Verizon's "2017 Payment Security Report," nearly half (45%) of the companies examined between 2015 and 2016 were not fully PCI DSS compliant.

Cybersecurity has become a leading topic both within and beyond the corporate boardroom. This attention is well-founded and marks a transition from information security being a concern primarily for businesses and governments to it being broadly acknowledged as an issue that impacts and requires the attention of everyone, from individual consumers to entire countries.

2017 was a momentous year in security, even though the DDoS landscape appeared to plateau. Maybe it was because Mirai hit so hard at the end of 2016 and the owners of other botnets were retooling to catch up. Maybe it was because news of large data breaches captured so many headlines, drawing the attention of both criminals and the public. Or maybe it is simply due to the cyclical nature of attack popularity that we have seen in the past. No matter the cause, our prediction is that the trend won’t continue in 2018, and it is not time to be complacent. The Mirai botnet is far from played out, as botnet creators are continuing to modify the source code for their individual needs and, with more connected platforms devices than ever, the Internet will continue to offer fertile ground for largescale attacks.

In the year 2016 alone, the world learned about security breaches that compromised nearly 2 billion records.1 Employee endpoints are increasingly targeted: Nearly two-thirds (64%) of external attacks last year targeted a corporate-owned, employee-owned, or mobile device.2 Data breaches cost companies time and money, weaken brand reputation, and jeopardize customer and employee trust.

"To tackle today’s cyber threats, IT security leaders must rethink traditional security strategies. Email security in particular has become a victim of its own success and requires a radical rethink, having played a key role in several high-profile security breaches. Today’s threats, like spear-phishing, are designed to bypass traditional Secure Email Gateway defenses, often taking advantage of end users who are considered the weakest link in business email security armor. A zero-trust approach to email security is needed. This white paper discusses how: - CISO’s should carefully assess email security as part of a strategic security review - IT Managers can evaluate the state of current email defenses and take tactical action to strengthen them - Security Administrators can deliver best-practice defense in depth for email - Organizations can remove a reliance on trust to more effectively protect information, their network and employees. Business users are a key part of a company\'s security, and even the most conscientious employees can introduce serious breaches of security policy. IT can do everything in its power to secure the company\'s confidential documents--provide first-class security infrastructure, develop reasonable security policies and engage in extensive communication and training--yet still people fail to comply. The solution is to provide security that helps people do their jobs more efficiently, thereby inducing users to follow best security practices without even knowing it.
