In businesses and organizations across the world, rooms once humming with wires, black boxes and blinking lights now sit empty. In a lonely phone closet, there’s only dust, a single lonely terminal, or perhaps a foosball table where IT pros can let off steam. The cloud – and more specifically, cloud communications – is the source of the transformation, which has fundamentally changed the IT landscape. Some IT pros have embraced it. Some are working on migrating to the cloud over time. And others, through choice or necessity, are sticking with a premises-based approach. Read on to find out why some IT pros are shopping for game tables to go in empty server rooms while others are untangling wires and watching blinking lights—and which cases make the most sense for each approach.

Small server rooms and branch offices are typically unorganized, unsecure, hot, unmonitored, and space constrained. These conditions can lead to system downtime or, at the very least, lead to “close calls” that get management’s attention. Practical experience with these problems reveals a short list of effective methods to improve the availability of IT operations within small server rooms and branch offices. This paper discusses making realistic improvements to power, cooling, racks, physical security, monitoring, and lighting. The focus of this paper is on small server rooms and branch offices with up to 10kW of IT load.

The Wales Home selected the STANLEY Healthcare AeroScout Resident Safety solution because of its ability to protect residents throughout the building and grounds, with every resident carrying a personal pendant to call for help at any time. Alerts are automatically directed to staff via Apple iPod® mobile digital devices, and activity is captured in a database for analysis. The Wales Home is also leveraging the AeroScout platform for temperature monitoring of its server room and refrigeration units. Read this case study to learn more about how The Wales Home increases resident safety and autonomy with STANLEY Healthcare’s AeroScout® Solutions.

Cooling tends to take a back seat to other concerns when server rooms and small to mid-size data centers are first built. As computing needs grow, increased heat production can compromise equipment performance and cause shutdowns. Haphazard data center expansion creates cooling inefficiencies that magnify these heat-related problems. End users may assume they need to increase cooling capacity, but this is often unnecessary. In most cases, low-cost rack cooling best practices will solve heat-related problems. Best practices optimize airflow, increase efficiency, prevent downtime and reduce costs.

One of the fundamental decisions in the design of data centers, server rooms and network closets is which uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems to use. You cannot be certain that the power you receive from your local utility will be suitable for your equipment, or that it will always be available. And even when you are receiving good-quality power from the utility, equipment inside your facility (such as electric motors) can introduce power problems. A network/server UPS system conditions input power 24x7 to ensure that your equipment always receives reliable power and protection from damaging and disruptive power problems. A network/server UPS system also supports your equipment during power failures, providing enough battery backup runtime to outlast shorter outages. During longer outages, the UPS system will provide enough runtime to save files and gracefully shut down systems or to ensure that equipment is powered until standby generators are ready to support the load. When you’re designing a data center, server room or network closet, deciding which racks to deploy and how to configure them should be at the top of your list. Just like building a house, the surface details may steal the spotlight, but it’s the quality of the underlying foundation that makes the difference between success and frustration. Racks organize IT equipment, such as servers and network switches, into standardized assemblies that make efficient use of space and other resources. Depending on the options you choose, they can also improve power protection, cooling, cable management, device management, physical security, mobility, ease of installation and protection from harsh environmental conditions. Choosing the right racks and configuring them to match your needs will ensure that your IT equipment operates reliably and efficiently, saving your organization from costly downtime and other needless expenses.

When Alcatel bought out Lucent at the end of 2006, the two companies had already begun planning data center consolidations of their own, but the merger changed all that. As it turns out, the merged company created a plan to consolidate 25 data centers and 125 server rooms down to six data centers and just a few server rooms. This change has presented challenges, especially in terms of arranging downtime and dealing with employees' attachment to their servers and applications, but the company is on pace to meet it’s goal of reducing IT operational cost by 25% over three years.

Though power protection solutions vary in numerous ways, all but the largest data centers use basic approaches when deploying uninterruptible power systems (UPSs): Either they distribute many smaller UPSs among their server racks or they install one or two large UPSs centrally within or near their server room. This white paper outlines each architecure's pros and cons.

Just “keeping the lights on” in the server room is highly complex and largely inefficient. Maintaining IT infrastructure, system interdependencies, and application interoperability tie up valuable personnel and resources. The old way of simply throwing more hardware capacity at a problem can only serve to increase the complexity and further dampen productivity. In a perfect world, the infrastructure—hardware and software—would have been built as an integrated but scalable unit from the ground up. In our world, though, the best new systems combine independent pieces of IT infrastructure to form simplified computing platforms, freeing up IT to focus on business innovation rather than infrastructure management. Welcome to the new world of IT.

Not so many years ago, network closets, server rooms and data centers were designed from a “room to rack” standpoint. Deciding specifically where to store your technology typically came later in the design process. However, rapid technology refresh cycles, the need to rackmount more equipment and the desire for increased cooling capacities in an enclosed rack (known as an enclosure), have all begun to reverse that trend. Today, IT professionals are designing these critical workspaces with more of a “rack to room” methodology.

Growth challenges in Microsoft Exchange environments can be solved with the deployment of iSCSI storage. Microsoft favors block storage such as iSCSI for Exchange deployments. Attaching iSCSI storage to a network provides the server with headroom for adding Exchange users, since the storage can grow without being restrained by the server's ability to add storage.

Companies today are faced with managing an ever-increasing amount of data. The traditional solution to this problem was to increase the amount of space on a server by adding more hard drives. This strategy would be similar to a person continually building additional rooms onto a house in order to have more space in which to store all his or her belongings, but without any thought as to where items were being stored.
