VMware vCloud Director has created tremendous potential for service providers and enterprises to deliver agile and cost effective Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) through its ability to automate the self-provisioning of virtual data center service offerings by customers. Since a multitude of commodity cloud providers have appeared seemingly overnight, service providers and enterprises must harness technologies like vCloud Director to reduce the overall cost of delivering compute services. With automated self-service provisioning in place, the next wave of opportunities for cost and performance optimization lies in operations management. This document details how VMTurbo Operations Manager delivers unique business value, addressing significant gaps in VMware vCloud offerings.

If your company is using cloud computing services today, it’s highly likely you are already in a hybrid cloud configuration. The key question is whether you are actively managing this reality. In January 2014, HP commissioned Forrester Consulting to evaluate the state of enterprise hybrid cloud environments and how they are being managed. Forrester developed a hypothesis that tested the assertion that enterprise IT operations teams struggle to recognize and manage this hybrid state — a hypothesis that was proven out.

The rise of mobile applications, the shift from on-premises to Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), and the reliance on third-party services has increased the complexity application delivery. Online Operations and Site Reliability teams in firms of all types are now responsible for many parts of the application delivery chain. When things go wrong, no matter where, they’re expected to react quickly to minimize the impact on their customers. The challenge for application providers is that users may often experience service degradation when the application stack seems to be working perfectly fine, making troubleshooting extremely difficult. User adoption has always been something of an issue. Despite having ready access to SharePoint, many users cling to their file-shares, or more recently, adopt other ways of collaborating and sharing documents via web-based services. A third of the organizations surveyed feel that their SharePoint project has struggled to meet their original expectations, and a further 26% feel progress has stalled. Is this because of poor training and governance, restricted functionality of SharePoint, or simply the inevitable result of being the first ECM system to move beyond the safer boundaries of compliance-based aoperations? As we will see in this report, it is likely to be a combination of all of these.

With a wealth of information readily available online, consumers are now better able to compare products, services and prices—even as they shop in physical stores. When consumers interact with retailers publicly through social media, they have greater power to influence other customers or damage a brand. These and other changes in the retail industry are creating important opportunities for retailers. But to capitalize on those opportunities, retailers need ways to collect, manage and analyze a tremendous volume, variety and velocity of data. If retailers succeed in addressing the challenges of “big data,” they can use this data to generate valuable insights for personalizing marketing and improving the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, optimizing assortment and merchandising decisions, and removing inefficiencies in distribution and operations.

Virtualization was supposed to be the disruptive technology that saved IT. The cost savings from consolidation and the ease at which applications can be deployed promised to vastly improve delivery of IT services, free up IT staff to work on other projects, and not strain budgets. Unfortunately, lack of insight into IT resource status in highly virtualized environments and the complexity of the interactions between server, storage, and network elements have added to IT staff manual workloads and led most companies to dedicate too much time to operations and not enough time to innovation. This basically negates the major benefits of virtualization.

"Cloud computing, also known as 'IT as a Service', is predicated on delivering IT services on demand, an idea that has support from business leaders as a way to better align IT with business operations. Cloud computing has two key requirements: virtualized applications and seamless support and integration between the server, networking, storage and hypervisor components. In this paper, we explore these concepts and highlight the critical features necessary to move beyond server virtualization by leveraging key integration capabilities between IT components-with a particular focus on the important role that storage plays in the evolution of the datacenter architecture."
