With the current state of the economy, IT executives are being asked to stretch their budgets in order to keep their businesses profitable. In 2008, Median IT spending per user fell to $6,667 from the previous year's $7,397, according to Computer Economics. This represents a 6.2% reduction, consistent with the fact that IT managers were supporting an increasing number of users without corresponding increases in IT spending. IT spend continued to decline in 2009 and uncertainty and caution is still prevalent in 2010.

Enterprise conferencing and collaboration technologies today stand at an exciting crossroads. Solutions that were once considered consumer technologies are moving into the enterprise. Never has this trend been more pronounced than now, as consumerization of IT and mobile device proliferation increasingly break down the walls between business and consumer use. As a result, enterprise solutions must become increasingly simpler to deploy and more intuitive to use. At the same time they must deliver a secure and seamless communications experience. As the worlds of consumer and business communications blend, walking the line between the two has become top of mind for users and IT decision makers alike. Businesses must capitalize on these tectonic shifts in user preferences by deploying agile communications that today’s mobile users need in order to collaborate effectively wherever they are.

Some companies opt to deploy UC solutions on-premises, but the cloudbased model is gaining popularity. Cloud-based UC solutions are ideal for businesses that have limited IT staff, a distributed workforce and/or a desire for pay-as-you-go flexibility. By enabling diverse communication media to be carried over a common IP network, UC solutions make it possible to manage a full suite of capabilities from a single point—and use them with common devices. But what’s the best way to maximize UC capabilities for your specific workplace? Spiceworks surveyed IT decision makers to get their insights on identifying and deploying collaboration and communication solutions across their organizations. This white paper explores the survey results, including key concerns, pain points, and roadmaps around driving UC strategies.

Knowledge and strategic relationships fuel many organizations in today’s rapidly changing, global economy. As such, organizations need to leverage the individuals—and their networks—that possess the most relevant knowledge, whether they are current employees or are only loosely connected to the organization. To do this, organizations should create and leverage peer collaboration networks that enable them to identify and connect with individuals who have the unique skills, knowledge, and capabilities these organizations need. Bersin’s Research, Why Reputations and Networks Matter in the Open Talent Economy, indicates that this approach works in driving value—organizations that have effectively used internal reputation networks and profile databases have been able to increase key metrics such as employees’ time to productivity and innovation levels.

In the construction industry, as in business generally, risk management involves identifying risks, assessing them and then developing strategies to manage them. Organizations that manage risk well enjoy financial savings, greater productivity and service quality, improved success rates of new projects and better decision making. It is clear that, in today's complex business environment, risk factors are wide reaching, and are intrinsically linked to achieving organizational objectives.

It's a common scenario in the mining and oil & gas industries: the project has been approved to proceed and the pressure is on to get multiple parties – partners, consultants, contractors and suppliers – working together efficiently to meet an aggressive schedule. This challenge is often exacerbated by globalization and by the vast volume of data that flows between the project team.

Healthcare providers are starting to realize that using electronic communication, collaboration, and social networks to keep in touch with each other and with patients can improve the quality of care they provide. However, it also exposes them to risk since the information they share on these networks has to be protected in order to meet specific regulatory guidelines, like those mandated by HIPAA. The prescription for success is to consider compliant use of these networks before and while they are being used and the technology that helps achieve that goal. Read this paper to gain an understanding of: What the regulatory landscape of the healthcare industry looks like What concerns you should be aware of from a legal perspective

Government and public sector agencies are just beginning to realize how social networks can improve business results. With access to real-time communication, collaboration, and social networking platforms, agencies can improve internal process efficiencies that help them provide better services to their constituents. But first, these agencies have to consider regulatory requirements like the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) which require compliant use of these networks and the content people create on them. But what seems like a spoon full of sugar is often a tough pill to swallow when you consider regulatory requirements from agencies like the FDA for use of these networks. Adopting new technologies that allow employees to share information and exchange ideas with each other and with your customers is often the best way to achieve better business results, but doing so can involve considerable risk. That’s because the content people create using these technologies is subject to the scrutiny of regulators, legislators, and litigators. On top of that, increasing litigation has made it a business requirement to consider solutions that help bring down skyrocketing legal costs. Pharmaceuticals companies must be knowledgeable of, and abide by, specific information retention regulations in every country where they do business, including those countries that prohibit data from leaving the countries’ borders. Not having technology in place to help manage these requirements and increasing risks, or

The use of instant messaging in the energy industry is widespread, with one source estimating that as much as 60% of trading in the physical power markets is conducted using the technology. Moreover, a Microsoft/Accenture survey found that 34% of oil and gas professionals are collaborating more than they were 12 months earlier, while only 10% are collaborating less. While real-time communications, such as instant messaging, are very useful for traders and others in the energy industry, a failure to monitor and retain them along with other electronic communications can result in substantial penalties and other serious consequences.
