Don’t get me wrong – several aspects of life are much easier now thanks to the existence of the internet and digital technologies. People can jump between mobile, tablet, and desktop to search for vital information. They can read blogs, listen to podcasts, stream their favorite TV shows and keep in touch with people they careabout via social media. And it lets people shop, anytime and anywhere. The myriad of options available to today’s consumers allows them to visit the websites of numerous vendors and explore countless products. This is where things begin to get complicated - for shoppers and businesses: While it’s true to say that humans like choice, its omnipresence is quickly turning into noise. Without appropriate assistance and guidance, consumers are feeling overwhelmed, anxious and unable to make confident decisions. And, overwhelmed and indecisive customers rarely buy.

All three of our stories in this issue of the State of the Internet / Security report are about things most organizations aren’t examining. Whether the cause is that organizations don’t perceive some issues as important to their environment, if they don’t have tooling to monitor these issues, or if the resources to monitor this traffic are not available, this traffic is often being overlooked. Each of the stories in this issue of the State of the Internet / Security report looked at aspects of security (credential abuse/APIs/IPv6) that are often overlooked by the mainstream but are nevertheless important to day-to-day operations. These stories create a backdrop for what we expect to see in the upcoming quarters and years.

The network of yesterday is not the network that can take businesses into the future. As mission critical enterprise applications move to the cloud, wide area network (WAN) must adapt to become agile, flexible, and scale rapidly. Leading IT trends such as Internet of Things (IoT), Software as a Service (SaaS), cloud storage, enterprise mobility, emerging transport alternatives, and globalization increase the importance of how network assets are leveraged and how the network is conceptualized. The advantages of public and private data centers and cloud-based applications are significantly diminished if the network is slow, inflexible, and unpredictable. Erratic network performance with high latency, jitter and packet loss can significantly impact user adoption, satisfaction, and overall corporate productivity. As connectivity options continue to emerge, end users are no longer tethered to the office or to the localized applications and services that were trademarks of a primary or branc

The rate at which technology is evolving is increasing almost exponentially. In the business sector, hardware has given way to software-defined everything, while many on-premises technologies are now offered as a service. Much of the advances in technology over the last few years have been the direct result of the growing ubiquity of the cloud and faster connectivity speeds, both of which have enabled companies to adopt digital transformation technologies to help them work smarter and more efficiently.

The quick-service restaurant industry continues to be a favorite among consumers who look to the sector for a wide variety of food served quickly and at a low price. The speed and efficiency of QSRs, which include the emergent “fast casual” restaurants, match today’s on-the-go lifestyle of consumers across all ages who often are too busy to cook at home. That said, consumers expect their dining experience at a QSR to be comfortable with conveniences ranging from WiFi connectivity to ordering kiosks and dining area entertainment on large screens or even tableside tablets. They expect the information on menu boards to be accurate and up-to-date and their meal orders to be fulfilled quickly and accurately. Technology is a major enabler in meeting consumers’ expectations while simultaneously helping QSR locations increase operational efficiencies and quality of service.

Retail has been transformed by technology in multiple ways, from the way customers interact with retailers to how products are offered and acquired. Indeed, the entire shopping experience has been redefined and expanded to enable customers to purchase products anytime, anywhere, with any device, from any number of retailers. Consumers’ changing shopping behaviors and their reliance on technology enables retailers to reach a wider swath of potential buyers, moving well beyond the borders of their physical store locations to new geographies and populations. That said, retailers must understand how to use technology effectively to draw in customers and entice them to purchase, as well as help them improve their operations and enable new, innovative ways to keep customers coming back.

The Internet of Things (IoT) didn’t just connect everything everywhere; It laid the groundwork for the next industrial revolution. Connected devices sending data was only one achievement of the IoT—but one that helped solve the problem of data spread across countless silos that was not collected because it was too voluminous and/or too expensive to analyze. Now, with advances in cloud computing and analytics, cheaper and more scalable factory solutions are available. This, in combination with the cost and size of sensors continuously being reduced, supplies the other achievement: the possibility for every organization to digitally transform. Using a Smart Factory system, all relevant data is aggregated, analyzed, and acted upon. Sensors, devices, people, and processes are part of a connected ecosystem providing: • Reduced downtime • Minimized surplus and defects • Deep insights • End-to-end real-time visibility

Digital transformation is poised to change the supply chain more profoundly than any other functional area and more dramatically than at any point in its history in terms of driving efficiency and resiliency to disruption. In the context of the challenges facing supply chains, both now and in the future, it becomes clear that the old ways of working will not suffice and that even best-in-class performance today is unlikely to be good enough in the future. It is the view of IDC that the supply chain must become a "thinking" supply chain, one that is intimately connected to all data sources, enabled with comprehensive and fast analytics, openly collaborative through cloud-based commerce networks, conscious of cyberthreats, and cognitively interwoven. According to IDC supply chain research, technology is emerging as a prime driver of change, particularly artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Digital transformation encompasses both technological and human components. While many initiatives focus on ensuring that a company’s multi-cloud infrastructure is agile enough to meet changing demands around cloud mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), and big data, it’s equally important to empower business workers with the modern digital tools they need to be successful today. Artificial intelligence and machine learning can play a vital role on both of these fronts. In fact, 78 percent of CIOs and senior IT leaders are already looking to AI to address complexity,1 and by 2019, 30 percent of IT service desks will utilize machine learning to free up support capacity.2 The magnitude of change has forced companies to take stock of the experience they offer employees. As digital natives3 enter and advance in the workforce, talent retention is now a top priority.
