By focusing on frequent code integration, automated testing, and keeping the mainline code version in a state that is deployable to production at any time, CI/CD aims to eliminate the risks and friction of traditional waterfall software development. Add to that the practice of continuous deployment and you can move to a situation where the latest and greatest software version is not just always ready to be deployed—it’s deployed on a frequent basis.

Cyber-attacks targeting technology and telecommunications firms represent the most significant threat to their sensitive customer data and invaluable intellectual property. When successful, such attacks cost these firms dearly, not only in terms of immediate loss of revenue but also in the form of subsequent reputational damage. Technology firms that provide digital services or house vast quantities of user information are particularly at risk, as demonstrated in the Uber breach that exposed the personal information of more than 25 million users. Regulations around personal data, such as GDPR, increasingly require technology firms to adopt a robust cyber defense strategy that can detect cyber-threats at an early stage. Cyber-attacks aimed at technology firms with lucrative IP have also become a fact of life in the Information Age. Often perpetrated by nation-state actors with advanced capabilities, these attacks are now remarkably subtle and stealthy, with some of the latest examples b

Customer retention marketing aims to create engaged customers that return to a store or a website again and again. It’s a major shift in focus that recognizes the value of marketing to your existing customer base rather than constantly trying to grow it. Retention and e-commerce marketing success go hand-in-hand; without a strategy to maintain lasting relationships with customers, brands risk losing valuable data, deals, and dollars.

Like it or not, dealing with risk is part and parcel of what it takes to grow a business. Many serial entrepreneurs who notch up multiple success stories will describe themselves as risk-takers. One of the UK’s most famous examples, Sir Richard Branson, published a book called “ Screw It, Let’s Do It,” reflecting his willingness to take a chance even if the odds were stacked against him.

Because electricity is a key commodity for business it represents significant financial risk. Yet many power management systems remain isolated and separate from the rest of the business enterprise. The result is poor access to incomplete information, with only limited knowledge of risk exposure. An integrated, comprehensive power management system that includes metering, software, and power quality mitigation equipment offers the most holistic, systems-based approach to managing this risk exposure.

New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TÜV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plant’s overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. Things are not as they used to be in the enterprise. Today’s employees are mobile, they’re storing and accessing data in cloud apps, and are in disparate networks. While the present-day digital world has changed, the objective of data protection has not: you must still ensure the security of your critical data and intellectual property without impacting an employee’s ability to do their job. The key is to gain visibility into user interactions with data and applications. Once this is achieved, you can apply a level of control based on the specific user’s risk and the sensitivity or value of the data. An organization’s data protection program must consider the human point — the intersection of users, data and networks. Enterprises must remain vigilant of data as it moves across hybrid environments and highlight the users who create, touch and move data who may pose the greatest risk to an organization.

Today’s employees demand greater flexibility, productivity, and mobility. And while cloud and BYOD policies have answered that call, they’ve also added unforeseen complexities the way IT manages data security and compliance. How can you balance productivity and risk in SaaS environments? “A Guide to Achieving SaaS Security and Compliance” deconstructs the idea that cloud security and user productivity are mutually exclusive. This whitepaper includes guidance on how to: Select SaaS providers that follow the very same external standards (e.g., PCI DSS) as your organization. Apply the same in-house security, governance, and compliance principles to cloud services. Leverage tools and processes to gain visibility, control access, and protect data in your SaaS environment.

Office 365, Salesforce, and other cloud apps deliver a boost in employee productivity, but this benefit comes at a price. Once data moves outside an enterprise, security teams lose visibility and control into how it’s accessed and used. There is also the risk of unsanctioned apps or Shadow IT – the cloud apps setup and managed outside of IT that they have no visibility of; all this leaves an organization having to manage up to 1,000 cloud apps*.  Deploying a CASB solution can help you discover and assess risk from unsanctioned cloud apps and control sanctioned cloud app use. Through a hands-on evaluation, ESG discovered that Forcepoint CASB: Reduces threat response times Grants visibility and context into user activity Controls user access to cloud apps from different locations/devices Read the ESG evaluation for rare insight into Forcepoint CASB by a respected third-party analyst.
