With a surge of 25,000 devices and counting, Dartmouth College needed its new Wi-Fi to be fast, reliable and as smart as its students. In response, Dartmouth, based in Hanover, N.H., began deploying new campus-wide Wi-Fi from Mist Systems last summer. It expects to complete the project throughout the campus in three to five years, according to Bryan Ward, a network engineer at Dartmouth. The IT department manages the Wi-Fi through a cloudbased wireless LAN and can already see the benefits of better coverage and easier management. But the team faced difficulties when embedding the new system with Dartmouth's centuries-old campus architecture, which is less supportive of campus-wide Wi-Fi than modern architecture. The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

The adage “never stop learning” is alive and well for both the students at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) and its Additive Lab Consortium members. The school of 2,900 students, located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee has ties with 47 manufacturing companies, including Kohler, Snap-on Tools, Baxter Medical and Master Lock. The Consortium was born out of necessity 27 years ago when MSOE was faced with a 50 percent shortfall in the funds needed to get an additive lab up-and-running. The school approached industry and opened partnership talks around additive technology. Four founding partners came on board, each contributing one-eighth of the cost of the lab. In turn they were provided with non-competitive, shared access. Currently, consortium members pay yearly dues in return for lab hours and access to additive manufacturing expertise.

Teachers have always experimented with new technology and how it can be integrated to augment the lessons and content given to students. Classroom sets of books afforded teachers the opportunity to give homework, movie projectors and televisions offered an opportunity to display new content, and calculators transformed computational mathematics. Augmented and virtual reality are new tools that can transition pedagogy to include new materials and content. Students can travel to historical landmarks, world heritage sites, and past events from the safety of their classroom. Books can be scanned to reveal videos and three-dimensional content identified by the teacher to enhance the content available to the student. Download this whitepaper to learn more.
